Care instructions for our sisal rugs
Sisal is a natural fibre derived from the agave plant, known for its strength and coarse texture. Originally from South America, it is also cultivated in Africa. Sisal rugs are durable, have a beautiful sheen, and create an exclusive impression. However, they are sensitive to liquid spills and humid environments, as sisal fibres shrink when exposed to moisture.

Preventive actions
To keep your rug in good condition for years to come, it is important to handle it properly. Vacuum the rug regularly, both on the top and backside, to prevent dirt from becoming embedded. Be sure to vacuum carefully along the edges and any fringes.
To prevent uneven wear, rotate the rug periodically so that it wears more evenly and retains its lustre longer. If suitable, protect the rug from heavy furniture by using furniture pads and castor cups to reduce pressure on the rug fibres. Avoid dragging furniture across the rug, as this can cause damage.
Additionally, ensure that generously sized doormats are placed at entrances, as this is the single most effective measure to extend the lifespan of your rug.
Cleaning
Regular vacuuming is usually sufficient. For best results, use a vacuum cleaner with a rotating brush nozzle. Please note that we advise against using robotic vacuum cleaners, as they can damage both the rug and its edges. If possible, the rug can be aired outdoors. If washing is required, we recommend contacting a professional cleaner with expertise in rug care.
Stain removal
As mentioned above, sisal rugs can be challenging to clean since the fibres shrink when exposed to moisture. However, in many cases, stains can be removed by following our standard stain removal recommendations with extra caution.
For stain removal, first absorb as much liquid as possible using a colourless, absorbent cloth. Work from the outer edge of the stain towards the centre to prevent it from spreading. Use a mixture of lukewarm water and our mild cleaning solution, On the Spot. This product can also be used on ingrained stains. Follow the instructions on the bottle’s label for best results, and be particularly careful not to rub too hard, as this may cause visible differences in texture and colour once the stain is removed. A complimentary bottle of On the Spot is included with every rug purchase.
Important notice!
Over time, a textile rug will almost always develop indentation marks from furniture, which may become noticeable if you rearrange or move your furniture. Some marks may fade over time, while others may never disappear completely. Additionally, delivered rugs may sometimes have a broader indentation running across the entire width. These occur when the rug is rolled up for shipping but will gradually disappear once the rug is unrolled and put to use.
Please note that slight variations in colour and appearance may occur between deliveries due to different production batches. Also, all flooring materials are affected by sunlight over time.
Each natural fibre can exhibit variations in colour and texture. Dyed fibres may also differ in shade, resulting in slight variations between products delivered at different times. It is widely accepted that natural fibre coverings may display so-called bowing, meaning that some stripes may appear slightly curved. As a result, the binding edge may not always follow the rug’s pattern precisely, or the rug itself may not be perfectly rectangular.
